Welcome to Thirty

Well, it's finally here. I am officially 30. So how did my 30 under 30 list go?

1. Visit at least one MLB stadium.

2. Binge watch a TV show.

3. Visit a location made famous by moves or TV.

4. Learn how to change a tire. I haven't actually changed a tire by myself, so perhaps I should practice more before I can officially check this off. But I feel confident that if desperation was staring me in the face, I could do it. Hopefully.

5. Learn to sew a button on a shirt. I have finally learned how to hand sew things! Well, I hand sewed beads onto a vest for my DragonCon costume. I'm also in the process of making a skirt and beginning work on my costume for next year's DragonCon. I'm learning as I go.

6. Run/Walk a half marathon.

7. Eat dinner at one of the world's best restaurants.

8. Sing karaoke at a bar.

9. Learn how to make a good cocktail. I feel like it's fair to mark this one off the list. I've made a couple of mixed drinks (sangria mostly) but they've all turned out pretty good. I'm not destined to be a bartender or anything but I can make a decent cocktail.

10. Volunteer. I'm not sure I deserve to mark this one off. I have done some work at my church, but I'd hoped to have time to do more.

11. Go skiing. Unfortunately, I was not able to complete this goal...largely because I have planned my next vacation and am saving up. Italy, here I come!!

12. Take a pottery class. This also did not happen. But I still want to try it someday.

13. See a Broadway play.

14. Ride a bike. Ah, another goal not met. Maybe in 2018. I did look at bikes at Walmart, but haven't purchased one quite yet.

15. Re-purpose furniture.

16. Finally finish that rough draft. I don't want to talk about it. :p

17. Craft more. I haven't exactly become a craft master but I still feel like I can mark this one off.

18. Clean up my mess. There's always more to do and more to clean, but I have managed to get mostly organized.

19. Learn Spanish. I haven't, as you might suspect, learned to speak Spanish. I am however trying to learn a little Italian at the moment for my trip.

20. Get better at meal planning. Have I gotten any better at meal planning? Well...compared to the rest of my life, yes.

21. Develop a workout routine. Even though it gets off from time to time, I do have a somewhat established scheduled for working out. I haven't really been sticking to it the last two months, but, in my defense, I have been very busy.

22. Read at least one book per month. Do serial novels count? I have done quite a bit of reading this year, so this one is getting marked as completed.

23. Go to a sushi bar.

24. Buy a couch.

25. Scrapbook. Maybe next year.

26. Get my photography certification.

27. Treat myself!

28. Make jewelry. I actually made myself a Teen Witch necklace to wear for DragonCon this year. It wasn't perfect by any means but did turn out quite good I thought.

29. Complete a 30 day writing challenge.

30. Finish old projects. I still have a lot of projects I haven't finished. Not sure I can mark this one off.

So...I didn't do too well. But I did do a lot over the past few years. I still feel accomplished! I'm excited to see what comes next for me. And I hope my 30th year is the best one yet.

Organizing My Refrigerator & Under My Kitchen Sink

A few months back, the need to organize struck me and I decided to roll with it. I started with two areas that seriously needed help: my fridge and under my kitchen sink.

The first area I tackled was under my sink. I purchased some cute bins from the Dollar Tree so I could group items together. And, a space always looks neater when you put your items in containers. I pulled everything out from under the sink, wiped it down (there may have been a few spiders living in there...eek...) and then lined the bottom with shelf liner from Walmart.

Before

After

Looks much better if I do say so myself. Now I'm not ashamed for people to look under my sink!

I tried to sort items by purpose and put the products I use least often in the back. I had a bad habit of keeping empty wine bottles for crafting purposes. I purged a lot of those and only kept the ones I'd already soaked the labels off of. I put those and my empty vases to the back since I don't need to access them on a regular basis. I moved some items to other places entirely (like the fire extinguisher).

On to the refrigerator!

If you read my 31 day blog challenges back in January, you may know what my refrigerator looked like before I went on a bin buying spree. But just in case, here it is:

Not too bad, but could be better. First off, I was keeping water bottles in my crisper drawer and my broccoli on a shelf. I let myself be inspired by other bloggers and YouTubers. I ordered plastic containers from Amazon (it was cheaper than buying them from Walmart) and set to work. It took all of 10 minutes and that is only because I had to peel labels off all of my containers.

(I did neglect to take a photo until weeks later so the contents of the refrigerator have changed slightly.)

I love the way it turned out. Still not incredibly fancy, but it looks neater and I can easily pull bins out to find the condiment I need as opposed to pushing everything around (because what you need is always in the back). My favorite part is the bin that holds my water bottles. My drawers are now freed up to put actual vegetables in!

Both processes were simple and affordable but made such a difference in my kitchen.

If you want to check out the bins I ordered, you can find them here:

30 Under 30 Update

Spring has sprung and I am now 6 months away from the big 3-0. How its my progress coming along you ask? Read on to find out!

1. Visit at least one MLB stadium. I ventured off to Texas recently to visit Waco, Houston and Austin. Part of the trip was, of course, to watch the Braves play the Astros. Minute Maid Park was the first domed baseball stadium I have ever been to. I like the idea of it (no rain delays ever) but it was a bit odd watching baseball inside. The dome was open for one of the two games we attended so we got to experience it both ways. The park itself was really nice and I'm glad we got to go. Even if the Braves did lose both games.

2. Binge watch a TV show.

3. Visit a location made famous by moves or TV. My friends and I took a trip to Vancouver in March and visited Steveston (aka Storybrooke and the town from the new Power Rangers movie). It was pretty cool to see all of the buildings even though they weren't filming at the time. Just an FYI about Steveston, it is not that close to the SkyTrain station in Richmond and you have to take a bus. There was no one working at the train station when we visited so we had to figure it out ourselves. Also FYI, the zone tickets for the train expire in an hour and a half. :/ Buy a day pass, it saves money. Trust me.

I was also able to visit the Magnolia Market while I was in Waco. I love Fixer Upper so this was a highlight of the Texas trip. The cupcakes and cookies at the bakery are delicious.

4. Learn how to change a tire.

5. Learn to sew a button on a shirt.

6. Run/Walk a half marathon.

7. Eat dinner at one of the world's best restaurants.

8. Sing karaoke at a bar.

9. Learn how to make a good cocktail.

10. Volunteer.

11. Go skiing.

12. Take a pottery class.

13. See a Broadway play.

14. Ride a bike.

15. Re-purpose furniture.

16. Finally finish that rough draft.

17. Craft more.

18. Clean up my mess. I am actively working on this!

19. Learn Spanish.

20. Get better at meal planning.

21. Develop a workout routine.

22. Read at least one book per month. Read at least half of the books I own and have never read.   I have come to realize that this is one goal that just will not happen. I am constantly buying books (paper and digital) and I just simply do not have time to read 50 books in 6 months. So instead I have changed my goal to read at least one book per month, which I have definitely been doing this year.

23. Go to a sushi bar. While in Vancouver, we ate dinner at an authentic Sushi restaurant called Miko Sushi. It was a small place across from our hotel and the food was really good.

24. Buy a couch. I finally took the plunge and bought a couch! In fact, I wrote a blog post about it so check that out if you haven't.

25. Scrapbook.

26. Get my photography certification.

27. Treat myself!

28. Make jewelry.

29. Complete a 30 day writing challenge.

30. Finish old projects.

May Favorites

1. A Hot Glue Gun Mess by Mr. Kate- As you may know, I've been watching a lot of Mr. Kate's YouTube channel recently and I love it. When I found out Mr. Kate also wrote a book with personal stories and DIY projects, I had to buy it. It's odd, funny, gross and most definitely entertaining. If you love DIYs and don't mind hearing a few stories about feminine hygiene and plastic surgery, check this book out. You probably won't regret it.

2. Yellow Box Flip Flops- I can remember being a pre-teen and being irked by the idea of wearing shoes that fit in between my toes. Little did I know these would soon become my preferred footwear. I own A LOT of flip flops but my Yellow Box are some of my favorites. They are comfy and stylish and come in various colors and patterns. I think I'm up to 5 pairs now but I can't help but browse through them every time I go to Belk.

3. Benchcraft Zeb Queen Sleeper Sofa- I know, I know. We're tired of hearing about your couch! I just can't help but be proud of it.

4. Burt's Bees Lip Balm- I've used quite a few different chapsticks  lip balms over the years and Burt's Bees is probably my favorite. It keeps my lips moist and is made with all natural ingredients, which is a plus. It's normally the only lip product I use. Some people will do anything for beeswax (inside joke).

5. Cookie Jar Gift- This year for Mother's Day, I wanted to think of a clever gift for my mom & two grandmothers. The idea of making a gift basket entered my mind but then I saw this idea online. I bought cookie jars at Walmart and filled them with candy, lotion, nail polish and even quinoa. Each was personalized and they all loved their gifts. This could also work for birthdays and Christmas.

Basement Apartment Makeover- Part 2: I Bought a Couch!

So it only took 8 years but it finally happened. I bought a couch!

I've had this purchase on my list for a while now but just never followed through. About two years ago I went into a Rooms To Go to look at options (and prices). That was the last time I actively searched for a sofa. Until recently.

Getting inspired to re-decorate my living/dining room was just the push I needed to finally get serious about having legit living room furniture. Now, I didn't buy a whole matching set or anything. I'm not that much of an adult yet. Baby steps. Besides, right now I am basically living in an apartment that I (hopefully) will not live in forever. When I buy my own house, then we'll talk about matching furniture.

In the meantime, I am very happy with my purchase. After shopping online for several days, I decided on the Benchcraft Zeb Queen Sleeper Sofa I found on Wayfair. I've never used Wayfair before but everything went great. They offer payment plans for large purchases which enabled me to go ahead and buy the couch now instead of waiting a few months. The couch was delivered in about two weeks. It is firm but not hard and is plenty big enough for me to lay on without falling off, which is a plus.

I wanted a sleeper sofa for one main reason: so people could sleep on it! No way, right? But seriously, there are no other places for guests to sleep and I knew a regular couch would probably not suffice. Especially if more than one person stays over at a time. I haven't opened up the sofa bed part yet (because I haven't managed to get rid of my old couch bed and there is no space) but so far I love it.

My main concern now is storage. I used the trundle from my old couch to store games, yoga mats, weights, my lawn chair, etc. The bed has now been gifted to my dad for the guest room/his man cave so I'm hopeful he will let me to continue to store some of my things in it. Dads don't have stuff right?

In order to motivate myself to use them, I am going to leave my weights and yoga mats downstairs. I am supposed to be developing a new workout routine this month (per my 12 Months to a Healthier Life plan) but I've been so busy I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Hopefully life will slow down a bit next month and I can make even more progress on my re-decorating project.

Creating a Vision Board

Lately, I've been binge watching Mr. Kate's OMG series and it has really made me think more about my style and how to incorporate that style into the decorating process.

Since I'm redecorating now, I thought it would be a good time to make the space fresh in a way that looks and feels like me. Time to design! The problem is, I have trouble envisioning how things will look in a space without actually seeing them in it.

So I decided to take a page out of Mr. Kate's handbook and make a vision board. I browsed Pinterest and Google and compiled a few images I like to help me get ideas on how to decorate my space!

First off, I included a few items I already have: a red lamp and red vase similar to those above. I'd like to incorporate those into the design because I love them. Secondly, my walls have already been painted blue and the picture above was my inspiration for color. Now for the other elements:

Colorful rug- Since my walls are dark, and so are my floors, I would like to get a lighter rug. I shy away from whites because I know they will not stay that way and will show stains easily. I found the above rug on Wayfair and I think something like this would work great. It brings in the blue from the walls and the red from my lamp but also adds a little more color.

Photo Collage- Before I took everything down to paint, I had two photo collages on my walls. One I considered my wall of fame (where I kept photos of me with my favorite celebrities I've met at conventions) and one was supposed to be of family and friends. Problem is, I never filled most of those frames. I like the collage above, with various sizes and colors of frames. I'm thinking about painting some of the frames I have (they are all black currently) and trying to create something that looks good but isn't monochromatic.

An Organized Bookshelf- I moved my bookshelf from a dark corner to front and center so I want to make sure it looks organized and uncluttered. I want to incorporate not only books but picture frames and other cute objects or geometric shapes. It is the first thing you see when you come down the stairs so I want it to be appealing to the eye.

Rose gold- I love rose gold. It's probably my favorite metallic color but I do not have anything in that color aside from jewelry. I would love to find a small table or other accessories for the room in rose gold. My one fear is that it will clash with the reds I already have. Or maybe it's juxtaposition.

Plants- The only plant I have at the moment is a cactus and it is, believe it or not, kind of dead. I do not have a green thumb. But I love the way plants look in a space and I hear they also help improve air quality. I just need to find a plant that doesn't require a lot of care or sunlight.

Couch- Because everybody needs a legit couch in their living room. I'm leaning towards dark grey because I think it will go nicely with my blue walls.

Fangirl pillows- I have eight brown and red throw pillows on my current "couch". I wanted to find covers for them, something that would match a dark grey couch. Then one lovely afternoon, when I was browsing Etsy, I got really inspired. The perfect way to bring in a little more of my fangirl side (which is a huge part, let's be honest) was to find pillow covers from my favorite books, shows and movies! I am on the hunt for the perfect covers now. And even if they don't match each other, I still think they will fit in perfectly and will scream "Mallory lives here".

Making this inspiration board has really has given me a better visual of how I want to decorate. I would recommend trying this for your own space.

Basement Apartment Makeover- Part 1: Paint and Flooring

Well, it's official. I have the re-decorating fever. Every few years I need a change. Whether it be paint or flooring, furniture or accessories, I just want something different. About a year ago, I re-decorated my bedroom by purchasing a new desk, storage units from IKEA and Home Depot, new rugs and curtains. There are still a few projects left in this room (I have a new light fixture I need to hang and my blinds are falling apart!) but I've moved on to another major project: my living/dining room.

When I first moved into the basement "apartment" 7 years ago, I decided on a clay-brown paint for the majority of my walls, with a clam-shell peachy color for the accent walls. I'm not sure where the inspiration came from originally, but over the years I've grown tired of the brown.

Recently, I found a shade of blue that I absolutely love called Midnight Show. After very little debate, I purchased this paint color for my walls. My parents graciously painted them for me while I was in Canada a few weeks ago.

As for the floors... Carpet covered most of the living room space but a light hardwood sat under my dining room table. My original plan was to match the hardwood in the dining area and just replace the carpet. Unfortunately, this color has been discontinued and in order to avoid two shades of laminate, I just purchased flooring for the entire room. I opted for a darker color this time (Kingston Peak Hickory) and it looks good with the blue.

The next step is deciding which furniture to keep (and what to buy!) and determining the placement of my large pieces. Then comes accessorizing and styling, which will probably prove to be hardest part for me. I've been browsing Pinterest and watching a little too much HGTV and YouTube videos on home decor lately (check out Mr. Kate) so hopefully I will find my inspiration.

Updates to come!

P.S. Yes, that is a bed I am using as a couch. New couch is a must!

April Favorites

1. Midnight Show paint- I decided a month or so back that I was ready to re-paint my living room. I wasn't sure exactly what color I wanted so I started browsing Pinterest (like I do). I found this color by Behr and I loved the way it looked in pictures so I ventured out to Home Depot and found the paint swab. Soon after, I purchased a few gallons and my parents graciously painted while I was out of town last week. I love the color!

2. Pink Nail Polish- Since spring has sprung (sort of) in Georgia, I wanted a brighter nail color. The one pictured above is the closest pink I could find online to the color of my nails. I only hope I can keep from breaking a nail before Easter.

3. Cure For the Common Breakup- I recently started reading the Black Dog Bay series by Beth Kendrick. Cure For the Common Breakup is the first book in this series. I actually read the second book first (I didn't realize it was a series) but it wasn't a big deal. Each book can be read as a standalone though they do overlap somewhat. I've found myself hoping for books about other characters in this little town. If you like chick lit, you should check out this series.

4. On a Roll Work Bag- I've wanted a small rolling carry-on bag for a while now, so a few months ago I decided to take the plunge and purchase one. I got this one from a Vera Bradley outlet store and I love it. It was perfect for my trip to Canada. Definitely worth the investment if you love to travel.

5. Mid-Rise Rockstar Jeggings- I've had these jeggings from Old Navy for a while now but I love them. They fit really well and look good with an assortment of tops and shoes (which can't be said for all jeggings I have). And they are good quality even though I got a really good price on them.

Body Movers 8- What Happens in Vegas...

So let me start by saying that I knew Liz was a scummy bitch all along!

I mostly enjoyed the 8th installment of the Body Movers series, which saw Carlotta and the gang venturing to Las Vegas for a fun and uneventful vacation. Just kidding.

To summarize: Carlotta and Peter head off to Vegas for a "romantic getaway". Peter has to work some while they are there and Carlotta secretly hopes to sneak off to investigate a clue she found about her family. Wesley heads up to meet them, with Hannah and Chance in tow, determined to gamble away part of the 250k he found stashed in the walls of their townhouse.

At dinner that first night, Peter proposes again. With the pressure from everyone watching and after convincing herself this is what she wants, Carlotta says yes. Afterwards, she thinks maybe she and Peter will finally have sex but their plans are spoiled when she finds a dead body in their hotel room safe. But it's not just any dead body. It's that creepy hot guy from next door. (The one who Carlotta previously thought was spying on her.) She calls Jack Terry for help even though she is determined to get over him. She's been giving herself a good bracelet snap every time she thinks of him. Jack heads up with Coop to examine the body.

They find out this guy was in the FBI and had been hired to watch Carlotta and Wesley in case their mother showed up. He had asthma and accidentally suffocated in the safe. Jack also informs Carlotta that her father was stabbed in prison and is in critical condition.

Wesley, who manages to get a fake ID and play a few games in the casino, get arrested for using counterfeit money. As it happens, all of the money he found in the townhouse is fake. Which is unfortunate for him because he also paid off his loan shark with that money. He finds out from Chance that the Carver has now put out a hit on him and that his parole officer's boyfriend, who also works for the Carver, is in town. He calls Liz, who comes out to Vegas to help him, but he refuses to tell her or anyone else where he really got the money.

Carlotta and Hannah stake out a post office where her dad has a box and then follow the man who picks up the mail from it. When they arrive at his house, Carlotta meets a little girl name Priscilla. She goes inside and is surprised to see her mother. The man informs her that he is their caretaker while her father is gone. He doesn't know Randolph was arrested. Carlotta discovers that her mother has early onset dementia and that the little girl is really her sister. She decides to bring them back to Atlanta and has Coop come take a look at her mother to see if she is able to travel.

While spending the day with her sister, Carlotta runs into Jack and Liz. Jack seems good with Priscilla, which surprises Carlotta. He then secretly follows them back to her mom's because he is uber suspicious. Since he's not supposed to be involved in her dad's case, Jack is not happy about finding out about her mother's whereabouts. But he agrees not to tell anyone.

Wes finally confesses to Carlotta where he found the money and they conclude that their father had stolen the money on purpose from the company he worked for to prove they were counterfeiting, but had been accused and arrested before he could show it to the police (or something?). Wesley also finds out from Mouse (his partner in the collection business) that a woman hired someone to try and kill his father in prison.

For some reason, Carlotta automatically thinks it was Hannah (who has, admittedly, been acting squirrelly but that's your best friend gosh) and is worried because Hannah knows where her mother is. She calls Jack and asks him to meet her at her moms. But it's not Hannah who is holding a gun to her mother and sister. No. It's Liz. The bitch! Apparently, she had all of her money invested with the company Randolph worked for and they would be bankrupted if the truth about the counterfeiting came out. She was not having that. So she demanded to know where the rest of the stolen money was so it could be destroyed. Also, she planned to start a fire in the house to kill all witnesses.

Luckily, they are able to stop her and get everyone out of the house before it burns. Jack arrives and arrests Liz. Later, back at the hotel, Carlotta tells Peter she can't marry him and never should have said yes. (Well, duh.) We find out he knew about the counterfeiting and plot to frame Carlotta's dad. Jack arrives and arrests Peter as well. Then Carlotta, who has been reunited with her dad (who did not die and who has been released and exonerated), heads back to Atlanta with her family. It is also revealed that Coop is still waiting for Carlotta and she thinks she should end up with him. Which, no. And Hannah and Chance secretly got married.

I'm very happy that Liz and Peter have both been arrested because they are the worst. I do find it a bit odd that Carlotta wasn't more upset with Peter for knowing the truth about her dad and not saying anything. Which, maybe he hadn't known for long but then who was he talking to on the phone? It doesn't really make sense but I don't care too much because he's seemingly out of the picture.

I'm not certain what will happen to Liz but I kind of hope she gets at least 20 years. The only downside to her being arrested is Jack is going to have to take care of their baby on his own.

Side rant- I know I addressed this in my last blog about this series but I find it completely unnecessary for Jack to be the father of Liz's baby. It seems like the author was just trying to find a way to drive a wedge between Carlotta and Jack. In my opinion, Jack has been the front runner from the beginning and now, 8 1/2 books later, Carlotta is totally over him and going to run off with Coop? I'm pretty peeved about the whole situation. I was especially irritated in the way Carlotta said she was in love with Jack but it only took her a week to get over it? The whole thing is stupid.

I will be even more pissed if she and Jack both act like they don't have feelings for each other anymore after this book. In Coma Girl, as mentioned, Jack said he was in love with Carlotta. And he doesn't strike me as the type to easily fall in and out of love. I feel like we've had this character development with Jack, he's started to open up to Carlotta and even came close to admitting his feelings to her. Taking all of that away now is like a painful reminder of the How I Met Your Mother finale in which Barney regressed back to his old self. It made all of his previous development pointless. Lest I get started talking about that mess.

I feel like it's been built up so much...his house boat...his family...his feelings... If Carlotta doesn't ever get the chance to find out about any of this, if they don't ever have an emotional conversation... Then what was the point of any of it? Why bring it up if it won't be resolved? Are we supposed to believe that Jack is always just going to be a man-whore commitment-phobe who will forever be alone? That's bullshit to the extreme. End of rant.

This book in general seemed a little rushed and a lot of the characters weren't acting like themselves. Like, I know Jack is in a different position now but not one single inappropriate comment? Carlotta really wants to have sex with Peter even though she suspects him of treachery? Hannah marries Chance when half of the time it seems like she doesn't even like him?

I read this book in a couple of hours but it was quite a bit shorter than the others in the series. We sped through the plot and I feel like a lot was wrapped up in a very short amount of time.

I am also confused as to why Carlotta's parents left and more importantly why they were gone so long. I know people were trying to kill Randolph but why not take your kids with you? And everyone seems to have forgiven him but I'm not over it. He left his 19 year old to raise his 9 year old for 10 years. Like, damn dude.

I did like Carlotta's sister and I think it's cute that she's crushing on Jack. I think the way he interacts with her further proves he will be a good father. I'm excited to see more of her in the future. She seems like she could be a handful. At least Randolph is out of prison now and can take care of her and Valerie.

I am not digging the idea of Hannah and Chance getting married. First off, Chance is an immature loser. Second, I want Hannah and Coop to be together. Although, it looks like that ship has sailed. Ugh.

Wesley was actually less annoying in this book than all previous books so that was an improvement. Maybe now that his daddy is back he will stop acting like a petulant child.

Here's for hoping the next book doesn't crush my heart and soul.

March Favorites

1. Create 365 Planner- I absolutely love my planner. It has really helped me keep track of events, appointments, my workout schedule and more. I love this planner because it was relatively inexpensive (I got it on sale at Michael's) but it is still very cute and colorful. It has a place for notes, to-do lists and weekly goals. It fits my needs very well and has inspired me to keep better track of my life.

2. Jergens Hydrating Coconut Lotion- I recently started using Jergens lotion on my legs after I shave to help prevent burning and bumps. I love the hydrating coconut, one because it smells really good and two because it helps keep my legs smooth and moisturized. I also use it on my hands and arms to help with the dryness and cracking that always comes with winter weather. I tried using coconut oil on my legs for a while but it just made them too greasy for my liking so this is a great alternative.

3. Plastic Dot Stacking Baskets from the Dollar Tree- As I've mentioned, I'm on a mission to re-organize. I went to the Dollar Tree looking for the right storage to clean up underneath my kitchen sink. I settled on the Plastic Dot Stacking Baskets because I thought they were cute and they would allow me to easily see what all products I have. I will post a blog soon showing the results of my cabinet's makeover.

4. Journee Collection Tiffany Women's Slouch Boots in Taupe- Around Christmas shopping time, I went on a search for black boots as mine were falling apart. What I found were these marvelous (not black) boots at Kohl's. They were a little more expensive than a lot of the boots I own but I absolutely love them. They look great with jeans or leggings and are perfect for fall/winter.

5. Bet Me by Jennifer Crusie- My book recommendation this month is a romantic comedy (chick lit). I won't say this is the best book in the genre I've ever read, but it was funny and cute and I enjoyed reading it. I will say, I don't know how any one person could eat the same dish every night of their life like the main character of this novel did. I mean, I have favorite foods but damn. If you're looking for a quick, happy read, check this one out.

Decluttering My Closet: Konmari Method

Last summer I decided to revamp my closet. I searched the internet for ideas and finally found a style that I thought would not only look better but that would also make more sense. I decided to purchase The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo since I'd heard so much about it. After reading through the book, I decided to give her method for decluttering clothing and folding a chance.

I started by piling all of my clothes on my bed. Then I stood atop them and began picking up each item individually to see if it sparked any joy. I tried not to reason with myself or try to think of occasions where I would need an item of clothing again.

A good rule of thumb would be: if you have to think of a reason to keep something, get rid of it.

It went well, all things considered. Below is my donation pile:

I also tried the Konmari Method for folding and I actually quite like it. I am still folding my shirts and underwear this way. I like being able to see what all I have and it seems like I can fit more in my limited space. I have two storage bins under my bed for cosplay items and con shirts. Once I purged and folded them, everything fit with room to spare!

I bought my new closet pieces from the Home Depot and painstakingly put them together myself. I did enlist help to attach them to the wall. I didn't really hang my clothes via the Konmari method. I hung them in a way that worked for me. I grouped items together by type and color and didn't focus on length.

I folded my pants and sweaters and placed them on the shelves. I put items such as bathing suits, leggings and shorts in the bins. I finally found a place for everything!

Before

After

I was very happy with the way it turned out. It feels more organized and put together and the best part was I didn't have to find extra places to store my winter clothes. Everything fits! And after purging a good fourth of my wardrobe, I have a ton of extra hangers.

Below are links to the items mentioned above:

12 Months to a Healthier Life

I may have mentioned this briefly in another post but I have taken on a challenge this year to get healthier one month at a time. I found this particular challenge on Pinterest last month and decided to give it a go.

You can find the original article on The Beachbody Blog here.

In January, the goal was to focus on the positive. So I tried not to stress about parts of myself I don't like as much and things I want to change. It's hard sometimes not to think about the negative, but what you're really doing is discouraging yourself from changing those things. So think positive, people!

My February goal is to keep a food diary. As luck would have it, I had already started keeping a food diary in January. I use MyFitnessPal. So far so good except I do not understand the calorie adjustment thing. I tried linking MFP with my Striiv watch but it never showed any calories burned, so I'm not convinced the step counter really does anything in this app. Otherwise, I like it. I am able to keep up with my calories eaten per day and how many calories I've burned exercising. They also offer articles with healthy recipes and tips.

So if you're looking for a challenge for 2017 but a total lifestyle change seems overwhelming, try this one! I am simultaneously dreading and looking forward to challenging myself in future months (No added sugar and junk food? Eek!).

More updates to come!

February Favorites

I've decided to start a new blogging segment where I talk about my favorite things (clothes, beauty products, books, etc.) and give recommendations on the products I have discovered. So what am I loving this month? Read on!

1. Milk Shake Incredible Milk- I've been using this leave-in conditioner for a while now and I love it. It smells so good and it helps protect my hair from heat while conditioning and preventing frizz. I bought mine from a salon, but you can also find it on Amazon.

2. Plastic Storage Bins- I was inspired to clean out my refrigerator recently and decided to organize it using various sizes of plastic bins. The results have been amazing (I'll post the before and after in a future blog). I bought mine from Amazon and they weren't that expensive.

3. Buffy the Vampire Slayer Coloring Book- I got the recently released Buffy coloring book for my birthday, the latest in my adult coloring book collection, and I love it. It includes a lot of the classic Buffy moments and some of the show's best quotes. I haven't started coloring in it yet, but I plan to start soon.

4. Wrapped Arrow Ring- My favorite accessory lately has been my wrapped arrow ring from Charming Charlie. I wear it almost every day. It's simple but pretty and it doesn't get in the way of completing my daily tasks.

5. Green Nail Polish- This month I had my nails done in a dark green color (similar to the shade above). I wasn't sure if I would like it at first but I really do. It's the perfect fall/winter color.

6. Maroon Pocket Dress (MTS)- This dress is a recent addition to my wardrobe. It fits well and has pockets! It goes great with leggings and boots. I bought mine at JR Crider's, but I couldn't find it on their website. I did find a similar dress on themogan.com for $27.

7. The Night Bird- I recently finished this Brian Freeman novel. It's a thriller about hypnosis, memory loss and deception. I read the entire book in two days. It hooked me from the beginning and kept me intrigued throughout. I definitely recommend this if you're looking for a good mystery read.

31 Day Blogging Challenge Day 31: Why Do I Blog?

Why do I blog? Such a good question. I originally began blogging just because that's what people were doing and I've always had this dream of being a writer. I decided I wanted to document the last of my 20's and to challenge myself to complete a list of activities before I turn 30.

I've struggled with what else to write about and to find my niche. But I think for now I am blogging because I like it. And maybe some of my nonsense will entertain someone.

Since it is fitting for this post, here is a 30 under 30 update:

1. Visit at least one MLB stadium.

2. Binge watch a TV show.

3. Visit a location made famous by moves or TV.

4. Learn how to change a tire.

5. Learn to sew a button on a shirt.

6. Run/Walk a half marathon.

7. Eat dinner at one of the world's best restaurants. I was finally able to eat at Two Urban Licks in Atlanta. According to cntraveler.com, this is one of the two best restaurants in Georgia. They recommended it on their list of places in the world to eat so I am counting it! As recommended by our server, I got the scallops and grits and they were both very good. I also absolutely loved the pimento cheese hushpuppies. I tried a bite of the brisket, chicken and macaroni & cheese as well and everything I tasted was delicious. I definitely recommend giving this place a try.

8. Sing karaoke at a bar.

9. Learn how to make a good cocktail.

10. Volunteer.

11. Go skiing.

12. Take a pottery class.

13. See a Broadway play. My friends and I ventured down to the Fox Theater in Atlanta to see The Little Mermaid on stage. It was awesome and I love the Fox. This was my first visit but surely not my last. Maybe someday I will see a play on Broadway, but for now, off-Broadway will do just fine.

14. Ride a bike.

15. Re-purpose furniture.

16. Finally finish that rough draft.

17. Craft more.

18. Clean up my mess.

19. Learn Spanish.

20. Get better at meal planning.

21. Develop a workout routine.

22. Read at least half of the books I own and have never read.

23. Go to a sushi bar.

24. Buy a couch.

25. Scrapbook.

26. Get my photography certification.

27. Treat myself! I recently treated myself to a massage, & had my hair and nails done today. I love being pampered every once in a while.

28. Make jewelry.

29. Complete a 30 day writing challenge. I have now successfully completed a 31 day writing challenge! Now to keep up with blogging on a regular basis from now on.

30. Finish old projects.

31 Day Blogging Challenge Day 30: What's in My Makeup Bag

I'm not a big makeup person. I wear eyeliner, shadow, and mascara almost everyday but that's normally all. But on occasion, I like to add a little something extra. So what's in my bag?

1. Thirty One Small Cosmetic Bag- It fits all of the makeup I use most often and is easy to carry in my work bag. This bag came in a set with a larger cosmetic bag that I actually use to store my hot rollers in. I'm not sure if it's still available because I've had this bag for several years.

2. Maybelline Fit Me Foundation Stick (classic ivory)- I love this. I am not a fan of liquid foundation and this is a great alternative. It goes on quickly and smoothly.

3. Maybelline Fit Me Bronzer- I am quite pale most times of the year so I will occasionally apply a little bronzer to help with that (especially when I'm wearing a light foundation). My only problem with the Fit Me Bronzer is the plastic lid breaks off very easily. This has happened multiple times and once resulted in a bronzer explosion in my makeup bag.

4. Maybelline Fit Me Blush (light rose)- Oddly enough, though packaged similar to the bronzer, the lid on my blush has never broken off. (Perhaps I am rougher with the bronzer?) I like to apply a little blush to my cheeks when wearing foundation.

5. Maybelline Master Prime (Blur + Redness Control)- Like a lot of people, I have some unwanted redness on my cheeks, chin and forehead. It is especially noticeable in winter when I have zero tan. I love this primer because it helps even out the problem areas. Apparently a lot of other people love this product too because they are sold out every other time I look for it at Walmart and Target.

6. Maybelline Fit Me Set + Smooth Pressed Powder (classic ivory)- I've been told you need a powder to set your foundation so I continued with my Fit Me collection and bought this powder. It seems to work just fine.

7. Maybelline Super Stay Better Skin Concealer (ivory)- If it's not becoming clear by now, most of the makeup I use is Maybelline. It's affordable and works great for me. I bought this concealer specifically to tackle the dark circles under my eyes and it sort of works.

8. Avon True Color Eyeshadow Quad (mocha latte)- I've always been drawn to browns when picking an eyeshadow, which is why I love this particular color pallet. And since I rarely venture outside of these shades, one pallet is all I need.

9. Makeup sponge- I'm not sure of the brand on this one, but I purchased it in a set at Walmart. I love these sponges because they are infused with aloe and help blend my foundation well.

10. Avon True Color Glimmersticks Eyeliner (blackest black)- I've been using this eyeliner for years now and I love it. It stays on all day and is just dark enough for me without being over the top.

11. Avon True Color Wide Awake Mascara (black)- This is actually a new product for me. I'm not too picky about my mascara so I always order whatever is on sale. This happened to be what I bought last month. So far so good.

12. Q-Tips- I keep a travel sized box of Q-Tips in my bag at all times. I always need Q-Tips when putting on eyeliner. I simply refill my small box whenever I run out.

31 Day Blogging Challenge Day 29: Where I've Traveled

I am fortunate to say I have traveled many different places in my life. I won't list every place specifically, but I'll hit the most important ones.

Tennessee- I've been to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg many a time. Dollywood, The Dixie Stampede, the mountain views... And Nashville is a very cool city as well. I've probably vacationed more in this state than any other.

Missouri/Colorado/Ohio/Pennsylvania- These are all states I have visited to watch the Braves play. I have also attended conventions in OH and PA. I'd have to say Colorado was my favorite.

Maine/Nantucket/Martha's Vineyard- This past fall, we took my Grandmama on a trip to Maine (with stops in Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard). We got to go lobster fishing, see several really neat lighthouses, and some incredible views.

Florida- My family's go-to vacation spot when I was younger. Whether it be the beach in Destin or Disney World in Orlando, I always enjoyed trips to the sunshine state.

North Carolina- Myrtle Beach was another frequently visited vacation spot for my family. And I went on one of my senior trips here.

Hawaii- One of the most exciting trips I've been on was two years ago when some friends and I went to Hawaii. We saved up and booked through a travel agent (so it felt really official and important). We got to swim with dolphins, attend a luau, visit Pearl Harbor, eat great food and enjoy the beautiful beaches of Maui and Oahu. It was amazing and I would love to go back one day.

London, England- My only out-of-country trip was for an International Business class I took in college. We traveled to London for 10 days and it was fantastic (see what I did there, DW fans). We visited the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, Madame Tussaud's, Baker Street, Kings Cross Station, Stonehenge, and more. It was a lot of fun and a great learning experience.

31 Day Blogging Challenge Day 28: What I Am Looking Forward To

I'm not entirely sure if this is supposed to be long-term or short-term but we're going to go with short. There are a lot of things that I am looking forward to this year.

I am planning a couple of trips, one out of country, so that's exciting. I'm hoping to meet more of the cast of Once Upon a Time and to see the Braves play in a new stadium.

Of course I plan to attend DragonCon and Walker Stalker Con this year. Maybe this will finally be the year I meet Andrew Lincoln! (Not getting my hopes up too high on this one.)

My office is moving into a new building later this year and, even though it will be a lot work moving everything, I'm excited to be in a new building with better parking and not as much school traffic.

Even though I'm not really into football at all, I am looking forward to seeing the Atlanta Falcons in the Super Bowl (since they've only been once and it was like 20 years ago). Rise up and beat the Patriots!

Short term, I am getting my hair done next week (rose gold) and I'm nervous/excited about it. I'm attending two plays soon and our 14th annual Valentine Girl's night is coming up next month.

So yeah, there are several things I am looking forward to this year. And of course I look forward to spending time with family and friends. I always enjoy my crazy adventures with friends and our interesting family get-togethers.

31 Day Blogging Challenge Day 27: My Favorite Recipe

I love food. There is no denying that. And I love recipes because I am not one of those people who just knows what flavors work well together.

I have to say that my favorite recipe to date is home-made blueberry pie. I found this recipe on Simply Recipes years ago and have made this pie so many times, the piece of paper my recipe is on looks like I dipped it in oil and flour and baked it.

This one is definitely a crowd-pleaser around my house. I don't follow the original recipe exactly (I'm not big on measuring) but it always turns out great.

Ingredients

Crust
  • 1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour, plus extra for rolling
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar (increase to 1 1/2 teaspoons if for a sweet recipe)
  • 8 Tbsp (1 stick) chilled unsalted (I sometimes use salted if it's all I have) butter, cut into 1/2 inch cubes
  • 3 to 4 Tbsp ice water, very cold
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon milk

Filling

  • 6 cups of fresh (or frozen) blueberries, rinsed and stems removed (if using frozen, defrost and drain first)
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup white granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 Tbsp butter (unsalted), cut into small pieces

Directions

  1. First, you will need to prepare your crust. *Note- If you wish to use store bought crust, I recommend deep dish. When I make this pie, I buy the frozen crust for the bottom and make crust for the top of the pie myself. If you want to make a bottom and top crust, you will need to double the crust recipe.* Take one stick of butter and cut it into slices and place it in the freezer for about 20 minutes.
  2. Grab a food processor and toss in your flour, salt and sugar. Pulse a few times to combine your dry ingredients. Then add your cold butter. Pulse about 6 times and add a tablespoon of water. Continue this back and forth until your dough has formed (pulse, water, pulse, water). It shouldn't take more than 4 tablespoons of water. (Sometimes it only takes me 3.)
  3. Sprinkle flour on saran wrap to keep your dough from sticking. Shape your dough into a ball or disc and wrap with saran wrap. Refrigerate for 1 hour.
  4. To make your filling, combine blueberries, lemon zest, lemon juice, flour, sugar, & cinnamon in a bowl.
  5. Next, roll out your dough. (You want to make sure you let it sit for 10 minutes or so after removing it from the refrigerator before rolling.) If you are making your own bottom crust, roll out a circle of dough about 13 inches wide, place into your baking dish and pour in filling. If you bought a frozen crust, make sure it is thawed completely before pouring your filling into it.
  6. Place the pieces of butter on top of your filling.
  7. If you are making a top crust, you can do one of two things: Either roll out your dough the same as you did the bottom crust or roll it out and cut pieces to make a lattice top. I always do the lattice (although mine is more of a crisscross). I cut pieces about 1/2 inch wide and 6-12 inches long to lay across the top of my pie. If you want your pie to look fancier, find directions here.
  8. Once you have the top crust on, mix up your egg wash (eggs & milk) and brush it over the top crust of your pie.
  9. Bake at 425 degrees for 20 minutes. Then lower the temperature to 350 degrees and bake for another 30-40 minutes.

Here's a photo from my Instagram of a blueberry pie I made once:

Not super fancy, but cute. And soooo good.

31 Day Blogging Challenge Day 26: An Old Photo of Me

I couldn't decide which photo to use for today's blog. Should I use one from high school? From when I was a baby? From a crazy adventure?

After some debate I decided on this picture of my brother and I from 24ish years ago. I like this picture because it's sweet and that is one awesome shirt I'm wearing. And look at that hair! But also I chose it because it makes me realize how lucky I am to have a little brother.

When we were kids, despite what this picture may lead you to believe, we would fight quite a lot. He knew exactly what annoyed me and would use it to his advantage whenever possible. (Probably getting revenge for all of the times I convinced him there were alligators in the swimming pool so he wouldn't get in there with me.) He would bang on my door insistently or weasel into my room just to touch things I told him not to.

He knocked one of my teeth loose, I pushed him down stairs. Great bonding times.

But we would also play video games together (Sonic!) and spent many an hour in our tree house. We would ride our bikes around every inch of our parent's property pretending to be driving cars and visiting friends. And lest we forget the trampoline.

Now that we're older, we get along great (although, now he's bigger than me so I'm not so sure I could take him in a fight J). I'm thankful for the good times and the bad. And I'm glad we have gotten to the place we are today.

“There is a little boy inside the man who is my brother… Oh, how I hated that little boy. And how I love him too.” -Anna Quindlen

31 Day Blogging Challenge Day 25: 5 Favorite Blogs

What are my 5 favorite blogs to follow? Hmm, let's see.

1. Boston Belle (bostonbelleblog.com)- This blog belongs to Lauren, a girl I went to high school with. She lives in Boston now and blogs about her family life, home, beauty products, food, photography...you name it. I love her style and am always looking for recipes and decorating tips.

2. The Happily Ever After Project (http://www.thehappilyeverafterproject.com/)- I started reading this blog years ago when I first started my own blog. Celine has lived in different parts of the world and traveled to even more. She started following her own path and was determined to find her happily ever after without waiting on Prince Charming. Even though she has now found her Charming, that isn't what she set out to do. Celine inspires me to get out there and find my happiness without worrying about finding a husband first.

3. Do It on a Dime (http://www.doitonadimeblog.com/)- So I first discovered Kathryn on YouTube and I love to watch her videos. But I recently learned that she also blogs. She's all about organizing on a budget. Whether it be organizing a pantry with Dollar Tree baskets or DIY projects for under $5, she tackles it all...and doesn't break the bank.

4. Creative Party Ideas By Cheryl (http://creativepartyideasbycheryl.blogspot.com/)- We all know I love a themed party, and Cheryl has some great ideas. She posts about everything from kids birthday parties to adult costume parties. I love to check out her blog from time to time to get ideas for my next party.

5. Lauren Conrad (https://laurenconrad.com/)- Every so often, when I'm in the mood to exercise and eat better, I will check out LC's blog for tips and recipes. I also like to check out all of her fashion collections and read up on how she runs her business.

31 Day Blogging Challenge Day 24: Favorite Childhood Book

I can remember several books I loved as a child: Nancy Drew, Hank the Cowdog, Sideways Stories From Wayside School... But my all time favorite childhood book is Wait Till Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hahn.

Twelve-year-old Molly and her ten-year-old brother, Michael, have never liked their seven-year-old stepsister, Heather. Ever since their parents got married, she's made Molly and Michael's life miserable. Now their parents have moved them all to the country to live in a house that used to be a church, with a cemetery in the backyard. If that's not bad enough, Heather starts talking to a ghost named Helen and warning Molly and Michael that Helen is coming for them. Molly feels certain Heather is in some kind of danger, but every time she tries to help, Heather twists things around to get her into trouble. It seems as if things can't get any worse.
But they do; when Helen comes.

So, I've liked ghost stories since I was a child. I first read this book right around second grade and I loved it. I checked it out from the library multiple times. Now I own it (thank you, Goodwill) and have read it a couple of times in the past few years.

Recently, Lifetime released a movie called Little Girl's Secret, based on this book. Although, when I was looking up the movie on IMDB, it is listed under the book title. So I'm not completely sure who originally released it, but you can watch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQl9I5EYS9M

It may have been 20 years since I originally read this book, but it still brings me joy (and gives me a few chills) to this day. And just because it is a children's book doesn't mean adults will not enjoy it too. So read it if you haven't! Or, get your kids to read it if they like a good ghost story.

31 Day Blogging Challenge Day 23: Dream Job

Oh, how this answer has changed over time. I have dreamed of being a detective, a writer, a baker, a small business owner, an event planner... At this point, I'm really not certain what my dream job is. But almost all of the above still sit in the realm of possibility (I no longer desire to be a detective though Nancy Drew is still one of my fictional idols).

Most recently, I've been reading a book where the main character is considering becoming a professional organizer and I've convinced myself that is a job that I could do. I've been working to organize my space and I've even organized a few spaces for other people. I'm not really sure what the market is for a professional organizer where I live, but that would be a really satisfying job. I love getting a new space organized. Sometimes I just sit and stare at it for unhealthy amounts of time, admiring my work. Is that weird?

I do still somewhat dream of opening a bakery/coffee shop. Although, with Starbucks stores popping up everywhere, I don't quite know how successful that would be. But to have a cute little shop that's open for breakfast and lunch...I would love that.

If I could ever dedicate myself to finishing a novel maybe I could be something of a writer.  Ever since the day I wrote my first mystery novel in a bathtub, I have wanted to publish a novel. I haven't given up on this dream yet.

Since I love to travel, I've often thought it would be great to have a job I could do from anywhere. Perhaps an online business? Or my own show where I travel around the world eating and visiting historic places? Hit me up, Travel Channel! Or maybe I could be a travel blogger.

Any and all of that would be great. Now, to make it happen.

31 Day Blogging Challenge Day 22: Best Thing To Happen This Year

Well, I'm only 22 days in but I have managed to do some pretty cool stuff so far.

One of the best things I've gotten to do is go see The Little Mermaid at the Fox Theater. I love plays and this off-Broadway show was awesome. It included songs we all know and love from the Disney movie, along with original songs that gave all characters a chance to sing. Sebastian was my favorite character.

After the show, we ate a late dinner at Two Urban Licks. According to cntraveler.com, this is one of the two best restaurants in Georgia and one of the best places in the world to eat.

I had the scallops and grits and it was amazing. We also shared pimento cheese hushpuppies and they were to die for.

I also went to Dave and Buster's for the first time in 10 years to celebrate my friend Lesley's birthday. I managed to break a hundred while bowling (which is always my goal) and walked away from the games with a new pair of sunglasses and a rubber rabbit with one leg. To top it off, they had really delicious frozen drinks.

So far this year has been pretty good. Here's for hoping it stays that way.

31 Day Blogging Challenge Day 21: 10 Favorite Foods

Okay so it's possible I should have read ahead a little to keep from repeating myself on these blogs. Oh well. I've already talked about a lot of my favorite foods but not all of them!

1. Zaxby's fried house Zalads w/ Mediterranean dressing- These salads are my jam. I could eat them everyday I think. If only they weren't $8 and 1,000 calories. Sigh.

2. Marco's pepperoni magnifico pizza- Sooo good. And sooo bad for me probably. But you have to indulge every once in a while.

3. Medium flavored hot wigs from American Deli- My favorite wings ever! They have really good fries as well. Except, once they switched from crinkle to straight fries and that was a disappointment. But now crinkle fries are back and I am happy!

4. Home cooked stir fry (or meat and rice as I have called it since childhood)- With a simple recipe of stir fry mixed with onions, soy sauce, garlic and ginger, this was my favorite dinner at home for most of my life. Perhaps it still is.

5. Mongolian beef and steamed rice- Given, Chinese food tastes different everywhere you get it. But, like many others, I have my Chinese restaurant and it's the best. I used to order so often that I wouldn't even have to tell them what I wanted when I called.

6. Ice Cream- I talked about how much I love peanut butter and chocolate, but really I love most ice cream. If it's vanilla, just put some chocolate syrup on it and call it a day.

7. Church cooking- During summer revival or on Homecoming days at church we have lunch. And the food is the bomb. My mom makes taco salad and fried chicken, grandmama makes green beans, Bonnie makes potato casserole, Debbie makes lasagna, Joyce makes apple dumplings. Listen, I just gained 5 lbs talking about it.

8. Buffalo chicken wraps from Beef o Brady's- I love buffalo sauce and it doesn't get any better than this wrap.

9. Homemade spaghetti- My mom makes really awesome spaghetti sauce and I love eating it atop noodles and topped with Parmesan cheese.

10. Fries and milkshakes- Do not ask me why, but eating fries with a milkshake is just the best. Especially from McDonald's.

Sadly, I am trying not to eat most of these things right now. At least not very often. Instead I've been looking for healthier recipes. I've recently downloaded the MyFitnessPal app in an effort to track my caloric intake and exercise. It is all part of a plan to be swimsuit ready by summer. And to win my staff fitness challenge at work!

Some of these recipes could just use a tweak. Spaghetti squash instead of noodles, cauliflower rice, taco salad made with ground turkey... it's a work in progress. More on healthy eating later.
